- Internationally renowned Galerie Utermann established in Dortmund in 1853, specialized in selling German expressionist and classic modernist artworks
People working in artistic environments have a substantial impact on the Dortmund scene. Artists, sculptors, goldsmiths and silversmiths as well as restorers, the art products trade and heritage-listed establishments all belong to the art market. The theatre market includes all artists who perform on stage, the radio or television and in films—soloists and ensembles, employed and self-employed artists. There are also venues such as the opera, theatres, music halls and cabaret theatres which are all part of this sector.
In addition to the classic cultural activities, a lively independent theatre scene has developed in Dortmund. More than 30 ensembles put a varied program onto the stage—with something for everyone, from children to senior citizens. High quality independent theatre productions are also put on in the city, increasingly with international performers. The local significance of independent theatre in Dortmund can also be seen at the “Theaterzwang” and “Off limits” festivals which take place in alternate years.
