Data and Facts

  • 480 registered employees work directly in the music industry and, according to a survey, companies with music business connections employ almost 2,500 staff
  • The “domicil” has been listed as one of the world’s Top 100 Jazz Clubs for many years

Where the music plays! In addition to the musicians, orchestras, choirs, composers and music coordinators, the music business includes concert organizers and venues, publishers and producers of recording media, instrument and equipment manufacturers and retailers as well as discos, dance-halls and dancing schools.Dortmund’s music scene is particularly varied.

In addition to the venues run or supported by the City such as the Concert Hall and Opera, the “domicil” and the FZW, numerous privately owned venues regularly include live music in their programs—first and foremost the Westfalenhallen. This wide range of venues provides platforms for musicians from all over the world and above all for the musicians educated and trained at the renowned colleges and academies in Dortmund. The organizations with the highest turnovers in this sector are the Westfalenhallen, the Concert Hall and Opera as well as the GEMA Regional Headquarters NRW. But there are also numerous smaller companies which contribute to the success of the music business, with particular focus on pop culture and music, jazz and world music as well as choirs and classical music.
